Description
This simple worksheet is, in fact, a rich, scaffolded learning task which shows the connections between fractions, divisions, decimals and percentages as well as a graphical representation of them.
In the first instance, students translate each fraction into a division noting the way this is done in the first few rows for them. Next students turn each division into a decimal using either a calculator (for a more accessible option) or long division (as an excellent revision of primary school mathematical skills and concepts). Observant students will also be able to use the patterns inherent in the set to complete cells without going to the trouble of explicitly calculating them. Because this sheet includes ninths and thirds, students get exposure to recurring decimals in a way that is accessible and potentially predictable. Lastly, students have the opportunity to see the straight-forward connection between decimals and percentages.
Furthermore, because students need to fill in some rows of the shading section, it also functions as a very quick ‘exit ticket’ or ‘Assessment as Learning’ (AaL). It also paves the way for making the most out of the FDP Cards available through this site.
